What the Rhode Island process looks like
1.Establish the program
Seek local school committee approval
Apply to the local school committee for approval to homeschool before starting. Districts typically ask for the subjects to be taught, attendance-keeping assurance, and how instruction meets the state requirements.
Withdraw from prior school (if applicable)
Withdraw the child from any current school after approval.
2.During the year
Teach required subjects and keep attendance
Provide instruction in reading, writing, geography, arithmetic, US and RI history, and other required subjects for substantially equal time to public schools, and keep an attendance register.
3.End of year
Provide any district-required reporting
Provide whatever year-end reporting the approving district requires (some ask for a progress summary or portfolio; a few request testing). The specifics are district-set.
