Maine requires notice to the state commissioner and local school within 10 days of starting and annually, plus an annual assessment (test, teacher review, or advisory-board review).

What the Maine process looks like
1.Establish the program
File the notice of intent
Submit written notice to the Maine Department of Education commissioner and to the local school unit within 10 calendar days of starting home instruction, and file annually thereafter.
Withdraw from prior school (if applicable)
Withdraw the child from any current school.
2.During the year
Teach required subjects
Provide instruction in required areas (English/language arts, math, science, social studies, health, PE, library skills, fine arts, and Maine studies/computer at appropriate grades).
3.End of year
Complete the annual assessment
Complete one of the accepted year-end assessments: a standardized test, a review by a certified teacher, a local advisory-board review, or a portfolio review; file the annual letter confirming it with the notice.
