Louisiana homeschool requirements

Louisiana's main route is the BESE-approved Home Study Program: apply within 15 days of starting, renew annually, and submit evidence of a sustained curriculum; a separate nonpublic-school registration option also exists.

What the Louisiana process looks like

1.Establish the program

  • Apply to the Home Study Program

Submit the application to the Louisiana Department of Education (BESE Home Study Program) within 15 days of starting home instruction.

  • Withdraw from prior school (if applicable)

Withdraw the child from any current school.

2.During the year

  • Provide a sustained curriculum

Deliver a program of at least the quality offered by public schools and keep samples of work and records.

3.End of year

  • Renew with evidence of progress

Renew annually and submit evidence of a sustained curriculum — either standardized test results, a statement that the program is at least equal to public school, or a portfolio review.
