Illinois treats homeschools as private schools with no notice or testing required; parents must teach the required branches of education in English.

What the Illinois process looks like
1.Establish the program
No state filing required
No notice of intent or registration is required (a bill to add mandatory notice, HB2827, did not pass in 2025). Withdraw the child from any current public school.
2.During the year
Teach the required branches in English
Provide instruction in English covering language arts, math, biological and physical science, social science, fine arts, and physical development/health — the branches of education taught to public-school children of the same age. Keeping records is recommended.
